Virgin Islands Travel Information: Where are the Virgin Islands located?
The Virgin Islands belong to a group of rocks called the Leeward Islands that belong to another group of rocks called the Lesser Antilles. Most of these islands are bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the north.
St. Thomas is about 40 miles east of Puerto Rico. St. John lies just a couple miles to the east of St. Thomas, and the British Virgin Islands start just a couple miles to the east of St. John. St. Croix is roughly 40 miles south of the other two US Virgin Islands. (See map below.)

In the USVI we have three main islands: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. Oh, and we musn’t forget Water Island, a ‘lil rock just a jump away from St. Thomas.
The British Virgin Islands is made up of tons of islands, big and small, but the two biggest ones are Tortola and Virgin Gorda. There are also Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, Cooper, Norman, Peter, and more! It’s the perfect place to island hop. Wondering when should you go to the Virgin Islands? With pretty much perfect weather year round you can’t really go wrong.
