Virgin Islands Travel Information: Where are the Virgin Islands located?

The Virgin Islands belong to a group of rocks called the Leeward Islands that belong to another group of rocks called the Lesser Antilles. Most of these islands are bordered by the Caribbean Sea to the south and the Atlantic Ocean to the north.

St. Thomas is about 40 miles east of Puerto Rico. St. John lies just a couple miles to the east of St. Thomas, and the British Virgin Islands start just a couple miles to the east of St. John. St. Croix is roughly 40 miles south of the other two US Virgin Islands. (See map below.)

The British Virgin Islands is made up of tons of islands, big and small, but the two biggest ones are Tortola and Virgin Gorda. There are also Jost Van Dyke, Anegada, Cooper, Norman, Peter, and more! It’s the perfect place to island hop. Wondering when should you go to the Virgin Islands? With pretty much perfect weather year round you can’t really go wrong.

Where should I stay in the Virgin Islands?

Once you’ve decided on an island to visit, you need to know where to stay in the Virgin Islands, and what kind of accommodation will suit you best.

Each island has different areas or neighborhoods with distinct personalities, as well as several different types of place to stay from small family-owned inn to internationally-renowned luxury  resorts…and every eco-tent and villa in between.
